GENESIS CHAPTER 24

In this Chapter – Genesis 24, we'll read of the marriage of Abraham and Sarah's only son – Isaac. The year is 1856B.C. and Isaac -- having been born in the year 1956B.C. -- is now 40 years of age. His father will not allow him to marry just any woman; he will ensure that he marries within the lineage to ensure the non-corruption of the seedline through which Father will be born in the flesh.

23:1-24:67 ABRAHAM'S HISTORY. (OLD AGE). (Division)
24:1-67 Marriage of Isaac.
24:1-67 THE MARRIAGE OF ISAAC. (Division).
24:1-54 Eleazar's mission and his progress.
24:1-54 Eleazar's mission in progress. (Extended Alternation).
24:1 Abraham's blessing and prosperity.

Genesis 24:1 And Abraham was old and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.   ->   To this point and throughout all his life Abraham was faithful to Father and therefore Father Blessed him richly for be so faithful. But now it is time for Abraham's son – Isaac, who is now forty years of age to take a wife for himself and continue the seedline.

24:2-9 Eleazar's oath and commission.

Genesis 24:2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, “Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:   ->   This is how contracts were made three thousand plus years ago; there were no written contracts and they weren't using the custom that we use today of a hand-shake.

Thigh=According to the Midrash and ancient Israelite expositors, this is a euphemism for the organs of generation, as most sacred. According to Ibn Ezra and present Indian custom, on the thigh is a token of subjection.

This servant of Abraham's is probably Eliezer from Genesis 15:2And Abram said, "Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?   ->   Eliezer come from the prime of el and ezer or azar and from it we can derive that this Eliezer is the same as Eleazar and Eleazar in the Hebrew means: Yah is helper, and that is what we are seeing in these verses here in Genesis 24, YAH – Father helping this servant of Abraham's.

Genesis 24:3 And I will make thee sware by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:   ->   Abraham is in the land of Canaan and so are other peoples – the Canaanites, those peoples Father will three hundred and sixty plus years form now use Abraham's offspring to "utterly destroy." He desires to use the Israelites to destroy them because they were mixing and mating with the nephilim - the fallen angels.

I=Emphasis in contrast with the Canaanites; hence Abraham's horror of mixing the holy seed with that of the nephilim.

Genesis 24:4 But thou shalt go to my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife to my son Isaac.”   ->   Go back to Ur, the land of the Chaldees where Abraham's family is from and go to his people – blood relatives, and get a woman from them to be my son Isaac's wife.

Genesis 24:5 And the servant said unto him, “Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?”   ->   Abraham's servant asks him, "what do I do if the woman I select for you son, doesn't want to leave her family and homeland to come to your son?"

Genesis 24:6 And Abraham said unto him, “Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.   ->   Abraham tells his servant two things in this, (1) don't take my son out of this land back to Ur; and (2) don't take a women from these Canaanites to be a wife for my son; just put it in the hands of my God and He will ensure all things work properly.

Genesis24:7 The LORD God of heaven, Which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and Which spake unto me, and That sware unto me, saying, ‘Unto thy seed will I give this land;’ He shall send His anger before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.   ->   You just go back to my people in the land of Ur and every thing will be OK.

Genesis 24:8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow, then thou shall be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.”   ->   However, if the woman you select for my son refuses to come with you, then you are free from this contract; but in no way, shape, or form are you to take my son back to Ur.

Genesis 24:9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning the matter.   ->   Abraham's servant affirms this contract with Abraham.

24:10-11 Journey of Eleazar.

Genesis 24:10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia (Aram of (the) two rivers - Tigris and Euphrates), unto the city of Nahor (snorer).   ->   Ten camels is quite a haul of merchandise of an inheritance for a son – Father has truly Blessed Abraham and this dowry will be enough to impress just about any women to marry its owner.

So Abraham's servant goes on his way, and comes to the land of Ur.

Mesopotamia=Hebrew, Aham-naharaim.

Genesis 24:11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.   ->   He comes to the outskirts of the city where the city's well were and has Abraham's camels kneel. He's intelligent enough to know that at this time, all the people customs are just about the same; the women water the animals, and he is there waiting for one that he can possible select for Isaac.

24:12-21 Prayer of Eleazar.

Genesis 24:12 And he said, “O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray Thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.   ->   Though this servant of Abraham's is not a believer of or worshiper of Abraham's God - Father - YHVH, notice he does still pray to YHVH ELOHIMthe God of Abrahamthis truly is a good servant.

Genesis 24:13 Behold, I stand here by the well of the water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:

Genesis 24:14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, ‘Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink;’ and she shall say, ‘Drink and I will give thy camels drink also:’ let the same be she that Thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that Thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.”   ->   God of Abraham, it's time for the women to come and draw water for the animals, and I Pray to You that You show kindness to my master and You select for me; the woman You think suits my master and his son. I will speak to one, saying a certain thing, and You God of Abraham, put the words into the mouth of the woman that I may know which one You selected.

Pitcher=Still used in Palestine during the New Testament as can be read in John 4:28.

Genesis 24:15 And it came to pass, that before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah (Ensnarer or fettering by beauty) came out, who was born to Bethuel (Destroyed of God), son of Milcah (queen), the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.   ->   Father went right to work and sends out Rebekah, Abraham's brother's son's daughter.

Before he had done speaking=We can compare this with Isaiah 65:24, where Father tells Isaiah that He too will hear the people when they call out to Him - before they are done speaking.

Rebekah=Rebekah was a beautiful woman, and Isaac will be well pleased when he looks on his future wife.

Genesis 24:16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.   ->   Known her= this is an important statement which many today both Christian and non-believers alike misunderstand or misinterpret. For we Christians; Jesus uses this phrase concerning His return at Is Second Advent, and He directs it right at Christians who with their mouths profess tat they love Him, however their actions and possibly even their following after the antichrist when he comes in his role of instead of jesus, when the True returns; tells them this exact phrase – I never knew you and when He is meaning is that they have become impregnated by the false Groom when they True has just shown up. Also today, the non-believers and homosexuals try and say that what was spoken to the angels in Sodom and to the Levite at Gibeah only meant that they wanted to "get acquainted" with the angels and the Levite. They are wrong in both instances as the phrases meaning means just what is says had known or "to know" sexually.

Virgin=H1330 - bethûlâh, pronounced - beth-oo-law', and means: Feminine passive participle of an unused root meaning to separate; a virgin (from her privacy); sometimes (by continuation) a bride; also (figuratively) a city or state: - maid, virgin.. We can compare the word "virgin - bethulah" as used here with the use of it in verse v24:43 virgin H5959 - ‛almâh, pronounced - al-maw', and means: Feminine of H5958; a lass (as veiled or private): - damsel, maid, virgin..

Genesis 24:17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.”   ->   Here Eleazar is putting to test to see if this young woman – Rebekah, is she whom he should take home with him to be Isaac's wife.

Genesis 24:18 And she said, “Drink my lord:” and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.   ->   So far this young lady is responding correctly.

Genesis 24:19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, “I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.”   ->   Yes, this is she, Father has touched her and she is giving the right responses.

Genesis 24:20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.

Genesis 24:21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.   ->   Eleazar watched in amazement as with each passing second he became more sure that indeed YHVH had sent this one forth out of the city to meet and greet him.

24:22-25 His conference with Rebekah.

Genesis 24:22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;   ->   Eleazar is well pleased enough to now offer up a gift of appreciation to this young woman. He will now ask another important question of her.

Earring=Probably a nose or face ring as we'll see when we get to verse v24:47: Genesis 24:47And I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter art thou?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him:’ and I put the erring upon her face and the bracelets upon her hands. - H639 - 'aph, pronounced – af, and means: From H599; properly the nose or nostril; hence the face, and occasionally a person; also (from the rapid breathing in passion) ire: - anger (-gry), + before, countenance, face, + forbearing, forehead, + [long-] suffering, nose, nostril, snout, X worthy, wrath..

Genesis 24:23 And said, “Whose daughter art thou? Tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?”   ->   Whose daughter art thou=Will she provide the correct answer that she is of the Adamic lineage from Abraham's relatives?

Genesis 24:24 And she said unto him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor.”   ->   She answers - yes, indeed she is of his master Abraham's relatives. YHVH for sure has answered his prayer; she is the one that he will be taking home to Isaac.

Genesis 24:25 She said moreover unto him, “We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.”   ->   Rebekah invites Eleazar to come home with her and that her family will provide food for both he and his animals and also a place to lodge for he and them.

24:26 His worship of YHVH.

Genesis 24:26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD.   ->   Eleazar now knows that his master Abraham's God – YHVH, answered his and Abraham's prayers., so he immediately falls on his face—bows down—and gives praise and thanks to YHVH.

24:27-32 Reception of Eleazar.

Genesis 24:27 And he said, “Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, Who hath not left destitute my master of His mercy and His truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.”   ->   It is an awesome thing to come into the knowledge of our Creator - ELOHIM, to know He is there and that He does indeed answer our prayers.

Genesis 24:28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother’s house of these things.   ->   Rebekah excitedly ran back home to her mother's house and told every body there what had just transpired at the watering well.

Genesis 24:29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban (white): and Laban ran out onto the man, unto the well.   ->   This is the same brother – Laban, whom approximately forty years in the future from now, Rebekah will send her younger son – Jacob, to, in order to escape the wrath of her other son, his brother, Esau.

Genesis 24:30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and the bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “Thus spake the man unto me;” that he came unto the man; and behold, he stood by the camels at the well.   ->   Though these are Adamic people, Laban as we'll learn - really doesn't follow or worship YHVH. Money by way of flocks and material goods and false gods are his religion.

When he saw the erring and bracelets=he sees these things and all he can see are ways he can make money from this situation. This is characteristic of Laban who needs "to see" before he accepts, unlike Rebekah who showed kindness before she saw. Much like those who walk "by faith" compared with those who walk "by sight."

Genesis 24:31 And he said, “Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.”   ->   I have prepared=just like satan and our current usurper in charge "I" – it's all about him and nothing gets done without him or them. He didn't do anything except see the erring and bracelets on his sister's hand.

Genesis 24:32 And the man came into the house: and he ungrided his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him.   ->   Though is was not stated earlier, to lead a caravan of camels, it takes more than one man, and here we see that they have all come into the house and washed their feet.

24:33 Entertainment. Declined.

Genesis 24:33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, “I will not eat, until I have told mine errand,” And he said, “Speak on.”   ->   After washing his feet, he is made to feel right at home; and then his hosts bring out the food for he and his men. However, Eleazar tells his hosts that he cannot eat until he has told them why he has come all this way to see them.

24:34-36 Abraham's blessings and prosperity.

Genesis 24:34 And he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.

Genesis 24:35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and He hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.   ->   He identifies that he is their relative – Abraham's, servant; that YHVH has blessed him richly for following His ways and obeying Him.

And=Notice the polysyndeton to emphasize all the items which went to make up Abraham's wealth.

Genesis 24:36 And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath.   ->   That Sarah, Abraham's wife bare him a son – Isaac in her old age and that, with both Sarah and Abraham being old, Abraham has a wealthy estate with their son Isaac will inherit when they both return Home to Father.

24:37-41 Eleazar's oath and commission.

Genesis 24:37 And my master made me sware, saying, ‘Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:   ->   Here is the kicker; Abraham sent me - his servant, to find a wife for his son. I am not allowed to take a wife from among those who he resides in the land with – the Canaanites, I was told to come to his people to find a wife for him, I am also not allowed to take Isaac out of his country there in Canaan, he has to stay there, Abraham has told me that, "in no way, shape or form and I to bring Isaac back to Ur.

Genesis 24:38 But thou shalt go to my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son.’

Genesis 24:39 And I said unto my master, ‘Peradventure the woman will not follow me.’   ->   I even went so far as to ask Abraham, "what if the woman whom you seek will not leave her family and return with me to you in Canaan?"

Genesis 24:40 And he said unto me, ‘The LORD, before Whom I walk, will send His angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house:   ->   Abraham assured me that his God – YHVH, would be with me this whole trip and would assist me in the selection process. However, if it should come to pass that I return to him without the young woman whom he seeks for his son, then I am free of the oath I sware to him.

Genesis 24:41 Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath.'

24:42 Journey of Eleazar.

Genesis 24:42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, ‘O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now Thou do prosper my way which I go:   ->   As I and the caravan I brought with me containing my master's wealth arrived in your land today; I asked Abraham's God, to Bless my master and assist me in this process. I put forth to Him a fleece in order that I may know that He has answered my Prayer.

Said=Eleazar repeats his prayer from memory - but inexactly. Who could have written the actual words (verses v24:12-21) but the Holy inspiring Spirit? He records both the prayer itself and Eleazar's remembrance of it.

24:42-45 Prayer of Eleazar. Answer 45.

Genesis 24:43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, “Give me drink, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;”   ->   When your daughter came out to the well and I saw how pretty she is, I put forth a certain saying, and she replied with the exact words and actions that were required, so that I knew that YHVH had indeed answered my prayer.

Virgin=See written comment on verse v24:22.

Genesis 24:44 And she say to me, “Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels:“ let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son.’

24:45-47 His confidence with Rebekah.

Genesis 24:45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, ‘Let me drink, I pray thee.’

Genesis 24:46 And she made haste, and let her pitcher down from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also:’ so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.

Genesis 24:47And I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter art thou?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him:’ and I put the erring upon her face and the bracelets upon her hands.   ->   After she had replied with the correct response, I then asked her whose family she was from, and her reply was that she is from my master's relative's family, further ensuring that she indeed is the young woman whom my master seeks for his son.

24:48 His worship of YHVH.

Genesis 24:48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, Which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.   ->   As soon as she replied with what she did and I knew that YHVH had answered my master's and my prayer, I immediately bowed down and worshipped Him.

24:49-53 Reception of Eleazar's message.

Genesis 24:49 And now if ye will deal and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.”   ->   Eleazar asks them straight-up, "will you deal true and fair with your relative, my master – yes, or no?"

Genesis 24:50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, and said, “The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.   ->   Both Abraham's sister and her son - Abraham's nephew answer that, "as you declared; YHVH has spoken and we cannot go against Him."

Genesis 24:51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD hath spoken.”   ->   They continue that he is to take their daughter and sister, Rebekah back to Abraham to be Isaac's wife.

Genesis 24:52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard the words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.   ->   Again, though this servant of Abraham's is not a follower or worshipper of YHVH; he sees that YHVH has answered their prayers and he immediately bows and worships YHVH.

Genesis 24:53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.   ->   Remember Abraham sent Eleazar here with ten camels worth of wealth to secure - by dowry, a wife for Isaac; and now that Laban and Milcah have said that he may take Rebekah back with him; he provides the dowry payment.

24:54 Entertainment accepted.
24:54-67 ELEAZAR'S MISSION AND RETURN. (Introversion and Alternation.)
24:54 The return desired.
24:54 The request made.

Genesis 24:54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and the rose up in the morning, and he said, “Send me away unto my master.”   ->   With the days business now completed, every body settles down for a good meal and a little wine; then the next morning Eleazar and the men that came with him are ready to start their journey back to Abraham in Canaan.

24:55 Departure hindered.

Genesis 24:55 And her brother and her mother said, “Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.”   ->   However Laban and Milcah both want Eleazar to wait a few days before taking Rebekah away from them; this time was not as it is today with phones, cars and airplanes, they know they most likely will never see Rebekah again.

24:56 Request for departure renewed.

Genesis 24:56 And he said unto them, “Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.”   ->   Eleazar knows that Abraham is waiting; he also knows that any delay could cause all three Rebekah, Laban and Milcah to possibly change their minds and back out of their agreement; so he says to them to not delay him in his tasking.

24:57-60 Departure expedited.

Genesis 24:57 And they said, “We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth.”   ->   Laban and Milcah call for Rebekah and let her make the decision as to whether she is ready to leave right now or delay a few days.

Genesis 24:58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, “Wilt thou go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.”   ->   Rebekah says, yes, she is ready to go and that they can leave right away.

Genesis 24:59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, And Abraham’s servant, and his men.

Genesis 24:60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, “Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those that hate them.”   ->   Upon arriving and during his explaining the nature of his being there, I'm sure that Eleazar had shared the promises that YHVH had given to Abraham, as well as the wealth of blessings, and thus they also wished well of their sister and daughter, as she was going to become part of that promise. When you know and understand what those promises are, then it is easy to see how God has kept His word, and fulfilled all the promises written in His holy Word. They are repeating the promises that God said would come to pass.

Be thou the mother of thousands of millions=Were Rebekah's mother and brother saying that Rebekah herself would be the mother of and bare thousands of millions of children? No they were wishing their blessings upon her that her offspring would be as numerous as the stars of the heavens and the sands of the seas.

24:61-67 The return consummated.

Genesis 24:61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.   ->   You can see that even this part of the family was wealthy, because Rebekah had a nurse and several handmaidens that she brings with her.

Genesis 24:62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi: for he dwelt in the south country.   ->   Lahai-roi=Well of the living God. Our Father is the God of Living Waters; this is declared many times in His Word, in the Books of the Psalms, Jeremiah, Joel, John and Revelation. Isaac was out in some far off field and at this time knew nothing of his father's plan, and the sending forth of Eleazar to find a wife for Isaac.

Genesis 24:63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.   ->   Meditate=Hebrew - suach, meaning to mourn. Isaac was out mourning the death and burial of his mother, Sarah. He had no idea he was about to become a married man.

Genesis 24:64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, shed lighted off the camel.   ->   Though she knew not Isaac until she asks Eleazar who this was coming toward them; she is well pleased at the first sighting of her husband to be.

Genesis 24:65 For she had said unto the servant, “What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us?” And the servant had said, “It is my master:” therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.   ->   It was customary at this time for a young virgin woman to be veiled before a young man and Rebekah wants to do things right from the start; so she took the vail to cover her head, and present herself the virgin that she was, to her husband to be - Isaac.

Genesis 24:66 And the servant told Isaac all things he had done.   ->   Isaac now arrives at the caravan of camels and greets Eleazar, and his father's servant immediately tells the young man of where he has been and why.

Genesis 24:67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.   ->   .
